What Truly Determines Software Development Costs

The dominant factor is rarely technology — it is almost always unclear scope. Every open question in the brief turns into a buffer inside the number you receive. A supplier that does not know what happens on the unhappy path must assume the worst. Investing a few days in a discovery phase often reduces the total by far more than any rate negotiation.



Connections to other systems tend to be the next major multiplier. A feature that touches only your own data is predictable; the same screen connected to an old accounting system is another matter entirely. The unknown sits in the other system: undocumented APIs, long certification processes, inconsistent data. Ask any vendor to break integrations out as separate items, because this is the usual source of overruns.



Quality attributes can easily double the number. An application used by twenty people costs far less than the same idea handling a hundred thousand users. Audit and compliance requirements, uptime targets, scalability, traceability difference between vue and angular multi-language support all add measurable effort. State them early or else expect them to arrive later as change requests.



The mix of people behind the number matters a great deal. A day rate reveals very little on its own: an experienced engineer at twice the price frequently turns out to be cheaper overall than a pair of junior developers who need supervision and rework. The quoted figure is never what you will actually spend. Budget for infrastructure, third-party licences, observability and a change budget for every year the offshore software development company runs. A reasonable rule of thumb says that software in active use consumes a noticeable fraction of the initial investment every year simply to stay current. Ignoring this has always been the classic mistake.
